My plea for print news media
I love, love, love to read my local print newspaper, The Seattle Times, each morning.
If a daily edition is late due to inclement weather, I will read the paper on my tablet, but only if I’m quite certain the print edition won’t arrive, e.g., snow, power lines across the roads, the end of the world as we know it, etc.
But I don’t want to read the paper on my tablet – or sitting at my computer – as my only option.
NO!!!!!
The other local area newspaper, Seattle Post Intelligencer, switched to online-only several years ago. I’m thrilled that the Seattle PI is still available to readers but I fear the remaining local newspaper will end up with the same fate.
Why do I think so?

I’m thrilled the Times’ advertising sales are going up but I fear the ratio of ads to stories is indicative of troubles in the house. I understand that a large percentage of news-seekers rely on the Internet for up to the minute news coverage – I certainly check online when I hear of a breaking news story – but it’s the following day’s newspaper from which I glean, as Paul Harvey used to say, “The rest of the story.”

I agree, I can’t stand to read the paper online. I want to actually hold it and get that ink all over my hands. Our paper has been shrinking over the years, although the price continues to rise.

The shrinking newspaper is very depressing. I know it’s inevitable that it will eventually disappear, but I’m gonna fight it all the way. Have a great weekend, Jill!

Irene, I totally agree. I prefer the local print newspaper. I even get it delivered when I spend my winters in the south. I don’t like the online papers. It is just not relaxing to read the iPad or desktop while drinking my morning tea. But even some organizations I belong to no longer send a print edition of their newsletters. I am afraid we are losing this battle!
